The restless muse of Damon Albarn (b. 23 March 1968, Whitechapel, London, England) saw him exploring many different creative avenues during the early 00s, not least of which was the Good, The Bad & The Queen. This project, which released a self-titled album at the start of 2007, saw the Blur frontman collaborating with in-demand producer Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse, former Clash bass player Paul Simonon, Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, and guitarist Simon Tong. The latter, a member of the Verve in the 90s, was already working with Albarn as part of the Gorillaz touring set-up. The album itself, a suite of songs based around the capital city (London), was a surprisingly low-key affair, a million miles away from the brash cartoon pop of the Gorillaz or the cheeky boy Britpop of Blur's Parklife period. Although not enough use was made of Allen, one of the great modern drummers, the album played up to the strengths of the other protagonists, namely Albarn's unerring ear for a catchy pop melody ("Behind The Sun", "Green Fields") and Burton's atmospheric old-school psych production.
