The Automatic Biography

This Cardiff, Wales-based indie rock band were formed in 2002 by Robin Hawkins (b. 1986, Wales; vocals/bass), James Frost (b. 1987, Wales; guitar/vocals), Alex Pennie (b. 1986, Wales; keyboards/vocals) and Iwan Griffiths (b. 1986, Wales; drums). The quartet originally traded under the moniker White Rabbit before renaming themselves the Automatic. They quickly gained a following beyond their locale with their fiery brand of punkish indie pop, and by 2005 had attracted the attention of several major labels looking for the next big guitar band. After signing to the Polydor Records offshoot B-Unique, the Automatic made their recording debut in November 2005 with the limited edition release "Recover". Their first widely available release "Raoul", a jaded response to modern working culture complete with an addictive sing along chorus, received extensive exposure on national radio and introduced the band to the UK Top 40 in March 2006. The follow-up, "Monster", was even catchier and deservedly reached the UK Top 5 in June. There was more of the same on the band's debut, Not Accepted Anywhere, released the same month.
